The firm's labor and employment law department is one of Hawaii's largest and most experienced. In a 1995 national survey by The American Lawyer of 400 corporate counsel, we received Hawaii's only "Client's Choice" award for management labor and employment law. With 11 attorneys practicing exclusively in this area, the department has the breadth of expertise and experience necessary to be appointed to a broad array of approved attorney panels by insurers and to represent a broad base of private and public sector clients.

Our expansive knowledge of federal and Hawaii labor and employment law is highlighted by our authorship of two publications, "The Chamber Desk Manual: Labor and Employment Law for Hawaii Employers" and "The Model Employee Handbook for Hawaii Employers." In 2006, the firm produced "The 2006-2007 Chamber Desk Manual," which simplifies vast amounts of complex information about federal and specialized Hawaii laws that affect Hawaii businesses. The sixth edition of "The Model Employee Handbook" was published by the firm in 2005; it provides sample personnel policies, with helpful background information about applicable federal and Hawaii laws.

The department's attorneys are experienced in jury trials, bench trials, arbitrations, mediations and other forms of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, administrative hearings, union organization and election campaigns, collective bargaining negotiations, and investigation of claims. We also excel in preventive counseling and training, providing prompt and responsive advice to the immediate needs of our clients.
